I finally decided to bite the bullet and get a Byski waterblock for my XFX 7900XTX. I am very impressed with this new waterblock. I ran Cyberpunk on Psycho RT and the highest I got was 75 Celsius using Honeywell's paste. I was getting 95 Celsius with the Alphacool. I recommend if you have...
I'm in the low 90s with Ray Tracing on ultra in a heavy ray tracing part of the city. This is with 1mm shaved off all my standoff screws with regular paste. Eventually, I will try liquid metal again but won't happen until I need to do a thorough cleaning in about a year. Too tired of taking...
I'm pretty sure the reason Alphacool couldn't recreate this problem is the amount of money they would lose if they had to recall and then re-engineer this waterblock. There are just too many people with issues and it has to do with the coldplate not touching the GCD.
I did some experimenting with liquid metal and it seems my suspicions were correct. The GCD didn't even touch the plate from the waterblock. I tried to shave .5mm from all the washers and even then the GCD didn't touch the plate. I think Alphacool screwed up the engineering on this one. I...
That's funny considering I just ordered liquid metal as well. Hope I know what I'm doing. Only thing I'll be doing differently is adding liquid tape around the GCD. Glad it worked out for you.
After doing some more experimenting, I think my theory that the waterblock is not making solid contact with the IHS is turning out to be correct. I took it apart again and this time put a thick layer of thermal paste on the GCD and when I put it back together, I screwed on the bolts as tightly...
I wonder if those washers are removable. I will be experimenting myself including switching thermal paste and adding a thicker layer. I am suspecting that there is gap between the IHS and the waterblock.
That is disappointing. I'm actually getting close to 105 degrees Celsius when playing games. I was thinking of using less thick pads on the front to see if the IHS made better contact but I'm just guessing at this point. I might even try liquid metal if I get desperate enough.
I am also having the same issue with the hotspot. Also have an XFX 7900xtx. I have disassembled the waterblock and repasted but the issue still persists. I'm starting to get the impression that the IHS is too thick considering the quick temperature swings.
