Is there a calculator to work out how much radiator you need to cool 280w TPD?

Hi guys

Is there a calculator to work out how much radiator you need to cool 280w TPD?
How do you work it out to ensure you have enough to cool things down?
Thank you for your time

It always depends on how high the noise can be. For example, a 120mm ST30 radiator can handle up to 300W with a 4000rpm fan.

But there is a simple rule you can follow
80W TDP per 120mm radiator space with 600rpm fans
100W TDP per 120mm radiator space with 800rpm fans
120W TDP per 120mm radiator space with 1000rpm fans
150W TDP per 120mm radiator space with 1500rpm fans
180W TDP per 120mm radiator space with 2000rpm fans

This is only a rough guideline as there are a few other things to consider, such as the temperature of the ambient air or the air that the fans suck in.

Hello @Eddy

Could you provide the same example for 140mm radiotors?
"xxxW TDP per 140mm radiator space with yyyrpm fans"

or spare where we can find this little information?

Thx

With 140 mm radiators.... i would say +20W for each step at the list above.

Thanks Eddy,

now had I only paid attention in calculus I could have done the whole air pressure volume etc calculations ??

it’s a starting point

Mastakony just use the 120mm and you are on the safe side

Thx dude.
I already have 240 + 280 and i just receive a 360 to replace the 240

Hello Eddy,
Could you give us this same type of indication for the XT45 radiators please?
I need to cool a TR4 3960X OC and a RTX3090.
Thank you !
P.S: more interested at 140mm fans values.

Basically, you can add about 20W for the XT45. But the XT45s also behave differently with a single-sided component with fans up to max. 800rpm. They are fundamentally worse than the ST30. But if you put fans on both sides, the XT45 is stronger and performs better at higher speeds. If you take the UT60, they are always worse than the ST30 with fans below approx. 1200rpm on one side and only become really strong with 1500rpm fans in push and pull configuration. The Monsta only performs significantly better with Push&Pull and 2000rpm fans. But that all depends on the fans themselves. Unfortunately, it's not that simple.

Thanks for this details !
So, supposing you need to cool a 280W TPD CPU (stock) that I would OC and a RTX3090, running 140mm fans at max 1000rpm which type you'll suggest to buy and what size should be needed ? (for size I mean how many x 140mm ?)
Case would probably be a Phanteks Enthoo Elite.
Thanks!

So 280W CPU + around 350-400W GPU.... lets talk about 700W at all. I would recomend 6x 140mm space for a quiet solution with 1000rpm fans wich also works well with an ambient temperatures of up to 35°C. More is nice to have, but it would also work well with 5x 140mm with XT45 in Push&Pull.

700W would be enough if the CPU will be overclocked ?
XT45 on push pull would be possible only at the base of the case...on top only push or pull unfortunately...
Alternatively I can also mount an XT45 420 in push or pull on the front....

I was talking mainly with only Push on ST30 rads.

Overclocking with the 3090 is more or less usless. And the max Powertarget of 3090 cards is mostly something between 400-450W. Wich CPU? Threadripper? Depends on how much voltage you like to use. Could be 300, could also be over 400W.

I meant overclocking only the CPU... don't know yet how much voltage but was thinking reaching 4.3-4.4 GHz...let's suppose 400W+ just to be on the safer side...

Man..THANK YOU SO MUCH ! :D
You can't imagine how hard was to find this informations....I've looked and asked on many forums...but never got a clear and precise answer...even asking WC stuff shops...

So..2x420 ST30 would be an optimum solution !
Perfect !
Will look into it.
Thank you very much.

Thanks Eddy,

Good questions and great answers help many people!

thanks... so I need to work out how I can expand on my two Extreme 280... how to double it basically just for the CPU

probably need a bigger case!

Threadripper 3960x 280w default - running Prime95 on AMD MASTER overclock and I am nearly getting 4391 across all 24 cores 65c temp 100%fan speed (total 6 140mm fans incl the 4 in the my Extremes

CPU speed

AMD RYZEN MASTER - Creator mode OC - note that the CCX says 4650...? what does that mean? that it can push to 4650Mhz?

Tived...let me understand...you have 2x 280 radiators, and when your CPU is OC'd at 4,391 GHz, your temps (100% fan speed) are 65C ? Where you read that value ?
From the two images you posted, the one below, it show a temp of 41.37C....
Were both pictures taken at the moment ?

BTW....NICE CPU block there !!! I am jealous !!
I am waiting to buy on those blocks.....
Congrats !

Thanks Monta,

I think I included the second photo more to show the ccx frequency then the temp. I’ll double check.

i think it was HWMonitor and SIV app but I’ll check I think I did another screenshot

the block is beautiful ? like I don’t built computers to show off. They go under the desk not to be seen or heard but I look at that block an I am like hmm maybe I should leave it on my desk with a window ?

also I think it’s mounted correctly to give the max cooling, I read that someone hadn’t tighten it properly and were not seeing very good results.

thanks again
